Zion Train interview
with Michelle Benetello of 'Music Club' magazine from Italy. 12/94

Uk dub uprising?

ZT: In the last 3 years dub music has developed a huge new following in the UK. The inspiration for this is Jah Shaka Sound System and the prevalence of computer technology has made it technically possible.

What is wibbly wobbly world of music?

ZT: W3M is the base for Zion Train. There is a recording studio, graphics room, 2 record labels; Zion Records & Universal Egg, and inspirational decorations.

Our production works?

ZT: in the last six months we have produced or remixed:

Loop guru - 'Shrine' single - 2 mixes
Kotot - 'Eden' single - 2 mixes
Kastrierte Philosophen - dub mix for LP
Slipstream - spin-off band from Spiritualised - produced LP
New Model Army - 'Vengeance' single - 2 mixes
Hawkwind - 'Damnation Alley' remix
Molara - 'Conscious Living' - produced LP
Zion Train recently signed a deal with China Records in the UK, (the label that has been so healthy for the Levellers), and will have a new single, 'Get Ready', on the 27th of February and a new LP, 'Homegrown Fantasy' in May '95.

What are Zion Train's musical influences?

ZT: King Tubby, Jah Shaka, Scientist, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mickey Hart, Airto, TG, Jackie Mittoo, Wasla D'Alep from Iraq, Moroccan music esp. Luozhin Lbazz & Mahmoud el Gania, Bill Laswell, Adrian Sherwood, Crass, Pink Floyd, Tommy Cowan, Paul Desmond, Olodun, Ozric Tentacles, Bob Marley, Longsy D and many, many more.

What collaborations would Zion Train like to do?

ZT: We would like to work with any musicians or sound makers who are pushing forward. In general the collaborations that we enjoy most are with 'unknown' musicians who simply love to play. On a broader scale we would enjoy the opportunity to work with Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead, Zakir Hussain the great tabla player, Bill Laswell, Brian Eno, any Moroccan Musicians, Peter Namlook, Merzbow or Eric Morecombe.

What are your impressions of our age?

ZT: Now more than ever it is the time for all of us to assert our right to personal freedom and dignity. As the tide of state oppression drives greater and greater stresses into the heart of society, we as a united group of aware citizens should strive to communicate with, and educate one another, giving a clear message to all who hear us of a different way of living. The petty outbursts of this or that small group of bigots or idiots should not divert us from the fact that the state and it's agents are attempting to destroy our way of life and that truly is the greatest fight that we have before us. But while watching this go on before us we should never loose our perspective or sense of humour, life is for living.
