About 225 million years ago Huge tectonic plates came together under the earth's crust to form a single vast super continent "Pangea". The climate and geophysiology of the planet changed drastically and the "great dying" or Permian extinction wiped out whole families of species forever. Sixty-five million years ago the plates split again forming Laurasia that eventually split again to make North America, Europe and Asia while the other bit - Gondwanaland in the south drifted apart and forming South America, Australia, India and Antarctica.
The Kalahari ground squirrel survives the intense heat of the mid-day sun by using its tail as a sunscreen - spreading out the hairs and erecting it above its head in the exact position required to provide shade for the whole of the squirrels body.
In Japan and China sea cucumbers are a considered a delicacy and fetch huge prices for their supposed aphrodisiac properties - though the fishermen that harvest them earn less than £50 a month. Ten months ago it was decided to ban fishing of the cucumbers around the Galapagos Islands because there was a danger of extinction. In revenge fishermen slaughtered 31 giant tortoises some of those killed were at least 150 years old. Campers working in the sea-cucumber trade are also thought to be responsible for starting the vast fire which has ravaged Isabela the largest of the Galapagos Islands. The name Galapagos means "galloping saddle" in Spanish and refers to the shape of the shells of the giant tortoises once so plentiful on the islands.
This Wobbler is dedicated to Lonesome George - a 200 pound giant saddle-backed tortoise and the very last of his particular genus.
George is doomed to spend his last years in a desperate and totally futile search for a mate.
"When the last individual of a race of living things breathes no more, another heaven and another earth must pass away before such a one can be again."

Ant-acacia trees in south America develop special food stores in the form of bright orange growths called Beltian bodies to feed ants that in turn protect them from other pests.

At least one million gypsies were exterminated under Hitler's Nazi regime.
Just fifty or so years later John Carlisle Conservative MP for Luton North announces: "The time has come to banish gypsies into the wilderness".
Clause 125 of the Criminal Justice & Public Order act is apparently meant to prevent "racially inflammatory publication". yet the rest of the bill is exactly that. Nomads and Gypsies will be hunted down and "eradicated" all over again.
This was compiled before the bill became Law in October 1994,
the year of their Lord
The forthcoming Criminal Justice Bill represents the first time any British government has attempted to deal with a housing shortage via criminal law. Any person who is in unauthorised occupation of property even if they are just a tenant a bit behind with the rent will face eviction and criminal prosecution.
"I can foresee police involved in the forcible eviction from premises and those premises remaining empty, boarded up and people saying "was it necessary?"
I can see the problem of making criminals of people who are desperate to get the lives back in balance. Someone who has been made redundant, someone who squats & pays their bills. Along comes a policeman & evicts them - that's not what I joined the police force for & I don't think many people did." Mike Bennet, Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation. "We can envisage all sorts of grave problems. The police do not want to become the lead agency in de-squatting."
"The law society strongly believes that the changes to the existing law (on squatting) are unjustified not only because they are unnecessary but because what is being put forward in its place is open to abuse." Law Society statement.
There are around 864,000 empty homes in Britain.
There are thought to be around 17,000 squats in the UK. Less than 0.5% of which involve property belonging to private individuals.
Councils and municipal bodies regularly pay to have their empty vandalised by workmen in order to prevent occupation.
Kenneth Baker (Tory scumbag) regards squatters as "anti-social parasites" and has promised the government will "get tough on armed robbers, get tough on rapists and get tough on squatters"
Lady Olga Maitland ( rabid Tory scumbag) has stated openly in the House of Commons that under the new legislation people in rent arrears will be treated as squatters.
Under the new laws anyone granted a tenancy or holding a lease to a property can get an interim possession order within a day, the occupiers of the property aren't entitled to go to the hearing or be represented. If they don't leave within 24 hours they to 6 months in prison and a £5,000 fine. If they go back at anytime within a year they face the same penalty ANYONE found in the property within a month is assumed to have been there when the original order was granted they can be arrested without warrant and face 6 months or a £5,000 fine.
If it turns out you have been wrongfully evicted you can go to the courts and sue to get your home back.
ANYONE with an interim possession order or ANYONE acting on their behalf can USE violence in order to force entry to the property regardless of the occupiers.
In Britain IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for a single person to be officially registered as homeless. To get on the list you have to be at least mentally or physically ill as well as on the street.
The Bill also removes any obligation by councils to provide campsites for travelling people. Grants for such sites will no longer be available. Under new trespass laws any two people can be made to leave any piece of land if they have six or more vehicles with them. If they don't leave as fast as possible or attempt to return within three months they may be arrested without warrant, fined £2,500 and or jailed for three months.
If it appears to a local authority that persons are residing in a vehicle on any land forming part of a highway, on any other unoccupied land or on any occupied land without the permission of the owner those persons may be forced to leave. If they don't take themselves and their vehiclers away immediately or try to return within three months they may be fined £1000.
Any person who remains silent under police questioning will be regarded as admitting guilt. The right to trial by jury is to be removed for some offences. It will be an offence for more than 100 people to meet outdoors or in any venue partly open to the air!
